Mandelson’s extremities
by ecologics
About the news that Mandelson is now claiming that universities are engaging in ‘extreme rhetoric‘ when they voice concerns about the massive cuts being imposed on them by the New Labour government.
‘Extreme’ rhetoric? EcoLogics wonders, if schools were told to reduce their curriculum from 12 to eight years, would Mandelson regard that as a ‘modest’ cut?
Or indeed, if New Labour had been told in 1997 that it would be able to rule not for 13 years (1997-2010), but for seven, would Mandelson have regarded that as a ‘modest’ cut?
To say, as Mandelson is saying, that universities will have to reduce their courses from three to two years is extreme by any standards. For Mandelson to be pretending otherwise is another reason why staff and students across Britain’s universities must not vote for New Labour in the upcoming elections. (They must not vote for the Tories either, but that is another question.)
